Next summer I want to take this trip and the only thing I could find is a flight from Pitt to Romania then a train to Transylvania.. Is that my only option??

you can fly direct from Pitt to Bucharest? that's news to me......but yes, you'd need to fly to Buch, then take local transport

Yup. That's about it. Unlessyou want to fly to Budapest, Hungary and then fly budget airline Wizz Air to Targu Mures in Transylvania.

Flying to Budapest is definitely the cheapest and easiest way to get to most of Transylvania. It is only 3.5 hours drive from Ferihegy 2 Airport to the border with Romania at Artand/Bors (E60) which is 10 km west of Oradea. From Oradea, it is about 3 hours to get to Cluj, which is the largest city in Transylvania. My advice from personal experience because I visit family in Oradea, RO every summer is to fly from your city to Frankfurt Germany (NWA and Lufthansa have many flights into Frankfurt) and Frankfurt to Budapest. This itinerary can be purchased for around $1000 round trip in non peak season. Then pick up the train from Budapest to Biharkerestes (last train station in Hungary) and then cross the border by foot (you used to be able to do this...I've gone by car the last few years). Then pick the train back up in RO to your destination, or pick up a maxi taxi (minibus) from Oradea to your destination.
