Flight confusion between airlines! Help!!

Flight confusion between airlines! Help!!?
Ok here is the deal. I am flying out of redmond oregon airport to portland oregon airport thru united airlines. when i arrive to portland i am taking a flight to pittsburgh pa. using US airways. The reason why im flying united first is because us airways only flies out of portland oregon. BUT my main question, is it possible that i can have my bags put on my us airways flight from my united flight without having to re check them through security (the baggage fee is not that bad so it doesnt matter) and (i have dividend miles through us airways)

Typically, the answer is no. The different airlines find it hard to reroute the baggage from one airline to another.

Don't worry. United and US Airways are partner airlines. They will tag your bags in Redmond to your final destination which is Pittsburgh. Relax and have a great trip!

If it was all done on the same booking the luggage will be transferred and there will be no need to check in again. If not done in the same booking, you will need to request the transfer when you check in at Redmond.

If it is ONE itinerary from origin to destination, UA will take care of the luggage tagging to final destination. You will NOT see you luggage until arrival. Plus NO more security as you are already into the terminal. Remember to include your Dividend number for the UA leg, both are part of StarAlliance.

Yes it will happen as United and US Airways are part of the same alliance. But if you bought your ticket from Redmond to Portland and then bought your ticket from Portland to Pittsburgh in 2 separate transactions, then the airline will not transfer your bags for you. Make sure you get Dividend miles for the Redmond trip to Portland on United since United and US Airways are partner airlines.
